Bo Kaap

Monday 17th August

Today we took part in a walking tour of the Bo Kaap

The Bo Kaap, a small residential area above Cape Town’s CBD, is closely associated with the history of Islam in South Africa.

The oldest mosque in the country, the Auwal Mosque,is situated in Dorp Street, behind the Bo Kaap Museum. There are nine mosques in the Bo Kaap area.

Our accommodation is in the building top centre.

The Bo Kaap Museum is the oldest house in the area still in its original form. A mixture of Cape Dutch and English Georgian.

The population mix in the area is 70% Muslim and 30% other.

We walked along the streets of colourful houses and also came across some streets made with cobblestones.

We purchased food from the local takeaway and also checked out the adjoining restaurant.

We were allowed to enter the Auwal Mosque and here learnt more of the religion, culture and traditions.

Our tour ended as the Noon Gun was fired.
